2012 Vera Primitivo

2012 Vera Primitivo
2012 Vera Primitivo

This is our first year with Primitivo, which is Italian Zinfandel. Zinfandel and Primitivo are genetically identical but have been separated for a couple hundred years so there are some differences, but in general both are late ripening, love heat and sun, and have huge grape clusters. The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Les Collines Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. For the wine club version of this variety, we aged it in 40% new oak as opposed to 20% and we blended two yeast strains together, Red Fruit and VQ51. Ruby in color, ripe aromatics and flavors of blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, red currant, and acai lead to black tea, smoother more chocolately tannin, and a linear acidity typical of Italian styles but remains smooth. The wine is both jammy and delicious. 3.83 pH and 6.98 g/L of titratable acidity. Drink now through 2020.
